Fun Wine Trivia
Maybe the ladies should choose the wine...
"I think that society has decided that men ... are supposed to know about wine. [Men] have this horrible thing of having to decide what wine to choose, knowing that it is going to say something about them in the same way as one's choice of car does. It's no wonder that men get a bit uptight about wine. I feel that wine and women are a much more relaxed mixture. In general, women just go for the wines they feel like drinking, not the socially 'right' wine to be ordering."
-- Jancis Robinson, Master of Wine
Cooking with Wine
"I cook with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food." -- W. C. Fields
It Was a Tough Job
In the late Middle Ages, the wine superpower of the day was Germany, whose wines were renowned throughout the western world. Indeed, German noble families in the 16th century employed professional drinkers to entertain guests at dinners and parties. Their job: to make merry, drink plenty, and yes, belch loudly.
It was a tough job, but someone had to do it!

Don't Worry About It!
Even the experts acknowledge it can be very difficult to identify a wine. There is a famous story told about the legendary British wine writer Harry Waugh (1904-2001), who has been described as the quintessential English gentleman, polite and polished, and with a sense of humor, and who was a mentor to many prominent wine industry people such as Michael Broadbent. Harry was once asked if he had ever mistaken a Bordeaux (Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot) with a Burgundy (Pinot Noir).
His famous response: "Not since lunch."
